Eugene McCray Scholarship
History of the Eugene McCray Scholarship
Several years ago, in an effort to help fulfill the association’s purpose, TABCCM established the Eugene McCray Scholarship in memory of one of TABCCM’s founding fathers, the late Fort Worth City Councilmember Eugene McCray. The Eugene McCray Scholarship Committee (EMSC), composed of TABCCM members, awards up to four $500 scholarships annually to African-American high school graduates and/or college undergraduates. The scholarship may be used for tuition or fees and must be used by May of the following school year.
Eligibility Requirements
The EMSC determines the recipients, with alternates named in case the winner is unable to use the scholarship. To qualify, an applicant must:
- Have at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale;
- Be an active participant in at least two extra-curricular activities at school;
- Be an active participant in one or two church and civic activities;
- Submit an application along with an official school transcript to the EMSC;
- Submit a letter of recommendation from any member of TABCCM;
- Submit a letter of recommendation from any member of the student’s church;
- Submit an essay on “African-Americans in Municipal Government”; and
- Provide documentation of college enrollment.
Applications are submitted by the membership from across the state, and more than 14 awards have been presented to deserving candidates to date.
